Eastern Europe Glimpses (Excerpt)

By Bob Miao

I went on my first trip to Eastern Europe armed with very little knowledge about the region except for some novels by John Le Carré, Milan Kundera, and Joseph Wechsberg's account of the gastronomic glories at the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Strategically located, the region has seen the comings and goings of bigger powers throughout history. However, this collision and mingling of cultures have lent a special charm to its architecture, cuisine, and people. After the end of the Cold War, Eastern Europe has opened its arms and is showing its best to visitors from around the world.

I chose three cities in three different countries for this trip, Prague on Vltava River, Budapest on the Danube, and Split on the Adriatic coast.

Split, Croatia

When I told my friends in China that I was going to visit Croatia, most people would ask, “Where is Croatia?”

Part of the reason that Croatia is not a well-know destination for Chinese tourists is because it is not yet in the Schengen area.

I was going to Split (read “shplit”), and started my journey in Zagreb. Frankly there was not a lot to see in Croatia’s capital city, but after I had a meal near St. Mark’s Church, consisting of a whole wood fired pizza, a bottle of apple cider, and a hot pot of tea, all adding up to the equivalent of 8 Euros, I started to find the city quite agreeable.

The drive from Zagreb to Split was long but easy, with good road and very few cars. The whole country of Croatia only has a bit over 4 million people, living in an area 9 times that of the Shanghai municipality, with a whole range of mountains and 600 km of beautiful coastline.

Split is the largest city in the Dalmatia area, dating back more than 2000 years, first founded by the Greeks. But it started to be important after the Roman emperor Diocletian (ruling between 284-305) chose this place for his retirement, and constructed a heavily fortified palace fronting the sea.

The palace was so well built that even today a large part of it is still habited by residents and businesses, just as it was like 1700 years ago.

Walking through the little alleys paved with big flat stones, I passed by bakeries, grocery stores, cafés, restaurants, all looking ancient on the fa?ade. Sometimes I half expected Romans emerging from the door, greeting me in Latin which I don’t understand.

Split充满历史感的街头

The fact is, given Croatia’s troubled history, and its relative youth as an independent modern nation (1991), its people are very open, friendly, and welcoming. Most people speak very good English; some even speak at the same time very good Italian and German.

In the square between Diocletian’s Palace and the sea, a market was in full swing. I stopped at each stall to talk to the owners and sample the wines, olives, salamis, hams, cheeses, and whatnots. I found the flavors very similar to that of Italy, and liked them.

After the market I settled at a bar facing the sea, and ordered a glass of local wine. The sun was setting, casting a golden net in the sea and painting a nice hue on the buildings. Sipping the wine, I could imagine that Diocletian himself might have sat at the same place, drinking a wine of the same origin, and basking in the same sunshine.

What else to see:

Zadar (on the road from Zagreb)

Hvar (take a ferry from Split)

Where to eat:

Kadena

This restaurant offers great view of the sea from the terrace, and choices of sea food from the display cabinet.

Zrno Soli

The name literally means grain of salt. The restaurant offers a view of the boats and yachts and the center of Split. Diners can choose directly from the display cabinet of fish and seafood.

Konoba Fetivi

Konoba means tavern. This family owned tavern serves local specialties, including meat and fish. The desert is also very good, especially the apple strudel.
